What fits in a 20 yard dumpster?
A 20-yard roll-off holds about six to seven pickup-truck loads — enough for the contents of a typical three-bedroom house, a kitchen remodel, or a deck tear-out. It is roughly 22 feet long, 8 wide and 4.5 high, and around Hattiesburg it usually comes with about 2 to 2.5 tons of disposal included, so heavy material runs out of weight long before it runs out of room.
What a 20-yard takes in practice
Twenty cubic yards in a box about 22 feet by 8 feet with walls about four and a half feet high. Loaded properly, a pickup bed holds about 3 cubic yards, so this is six to seven pickup loads you never have to drive to the landfill.
Jobs that fit: emptying a three-bedroom house of furniture, mattresses, clothing and boxes; a kitchen tear-out with cabinets, counters and flooring; a wooden deck coming down; carpet and pad out of a whole house; post-storm limbs and debris from a big Pine Belt lot.
The walls are low enough to throw bags and broken-down furniture over by hand, which is why it is the size most households end up with. If the can has a rear swing door, walk the big pieces in through it and load heavy, flat items first.
Where it runs out: weight, not space
Local quotes typically include about 2 to 2.5 tons of disposal regardless of the can's size. Household junk never gets near that. Shingles, tile, plaster, brick, concrete and wet carpet do — a 20-yard a third full of shingles can already be at the limit.
Weight over the allowance is commonly billed at $50 to $100 per ton from the landfill scale ticket, as of the August 2026 market check. If the job is mostly heavy material, ask for a smaller can you can fill to the line, or ask what the allowance is and price the overage before you agree to anything.
When a different size is the better call
Step down to a 10 or 15 for a garage clear-out, a single bathroom, or a roof up to about 20 squares — paying for empty air is a waste, and a smaller can fits a tighter driveway.
Step up to a 30 if there is a packed attic, a shed or a shop on top of the house contents, or a full remodel. It has the same 22-foot footprint, just taller walls, and one size up is almost always cheaper than a second delivery. If the whole job is a handful of items, junk removal may beat any dumpster.
