What size dumpster for a roof tear-off?
For most residential tear-offs a 15-yard handles up to roughly 20 squares of shingles, and a 20-yard covers larger or multi-layer roofs. Shingles are heavy, so the tonnage allowance matters more than the volume.
Squares and layers
A square is 100 square feet of roof. A single layer of asphalt shingle runs roughly 250 lbs per square, so 20 squares is about 2.5 tons before you count underlayment and nails.
Two layers doubles it. If the roof is being stripped to the deck and it has two or three layers, size up.
Weight, not volume
A shingle job rarely fills a can to the top — it hits the tonnage limit first. That is normal, and it is why the material matters more than the yardage on this job.
Give the provider the square count and the layer count up front, and ask what the load is allowed to weigh and what a ton over costs. On a roof, that answer is the quote.
