Can a dumpster go on the street?
Usually yes, but it almost always requires a permit from the city and sometimes reflective markings or barricades. On your own driveway or yard, no permit is normally needed.

The easier route
If any part of your driveway or yard will take it, put it there instead. It removes the permit, the traffic risk and the neighbour conversation.
Describe your preferred spot when you arrange the rental and ask whether the truck can reach it. A driver who cannot set the can where you wanted is the most common way a delivery day goes wrong.
